The best burek in town
Burek. Yummy handmade deliciousness. Made from pastry that is stretched out until it’s very thin, and then baked full of either sweet or savoury fillings. Haven’t tried it? Then you should definitely come and taste the best burek in town from Burek Bakery at the markets.
Bill and his family, who also run Canberra’s Peppered Prawn restaurant, bake fresh burek at the restaurant to be sold each Sunday at the markets. Not to be confused with the Turkish borek, burek is a pastry that originates from the Balkans region of Europe, which is where Bill is originally from. Born in Serbia, he’s been in Canberra for 44 years and loves sharing his delicious burek with market visitors each week.
Together with his son, the pair sell burek in savoury varieties including beef and onion, trio cheese and the most popular, spinach and ricotta. Sweet bureks are also made filled with either sour cherry, or apple and cinnamon. Burek Bakery also produces scrumptious German style soft dough pretzels – so popular they sell out every Sunday.
Be sure to have a taste on your next visit to the markets.
