A new take on indigenous art from Yidinji
Greg Joseph, or Yidinji as is his traditional name, comes from North Queensland, has lived in Canberra for the last ten years, and now has his indigenous art shown all around the world, including at the markets. He uses bright colours to depict traditional aboriginal stories in his own contemporary way, Yidinji Art.
Having started at the markets ten years ago, Greg had the last year off busy with Centenary of Canberra celebrations, but is back every Sunday with his contemporary works on stretched canvasses. Having been an artist for nearly 20 years, he was taught in the traditional ways and traditional colours, but has made the art in his own style with strikingly bright colours.
His market’s stall sometimes features artworks by his son, Matthew, and Greg also regularly attracts the attention of our market-goers with his upbeat performances on didgeridoo. So just listen out for the ‘didge’.
