Fungi. Mushrooms. Mushies. No matter what you call them, they certainly are delicious and add a touch gourmet to your dishes, and the exotic to your garden. Markets newcomers Peter and Leonie and their business Fungi Co. are certainly in the know when it comes to all forms of fungi.
Peter started the business with his sister in the Dandenong Ranges in the late 1990s on their parents’ farm, having only recently moved to Canberra where Peter and his partner Leonie have been bringing Fungi Co. to the Markets for most of 2017.
The business specialises in mushroom growing kits, mushroom gardening, displays and design. Fungi Co. offers exotic mushroom kits and assorted gourmet Asian fresh mushrooms now at the Markets with varieties including Pink Oyster, Brown Oyster, Shimeji, White Oyster, Pearl Oyster and in the colder months, Golden Enoki and Nameko too. They also sell their ‘cuppa shrooms’ – mini gourmet mushroom growing kits inside a cute coffee cup made from Biopak compostable packaging. Grow Kits are also available and are more attractive to people wanting a continuous supply of exotic gourmet mushrooms – they are easily grown in the home kitchen or laundry and yield 500g to 1 kilo of mushrooms in 2 -3 crops. And in the future, Fungi Co. will also be running mini workshops about mushrooms on everything from gardening projects and mushroom dyeing, to mushroom biology, use and preparation.
