Sunday Markets @ the Old Bus Depot

Lovers of fine hand crafted wares, clothing collectors, food fanatics and jewellery junkies are just a few of the people who make their way to Canberra’s famous Old Bus Depot Markets every Sunday. In a fabulous old industrial building you will experience the endless colour, tastes, sounds and atmosphere that is “Canberra’s Sunday Best”. Find your favourite stall holder and visit the Markets this Sunday from 10am-4pm.


Jewel of Canberra

Jewel of Canberra is just like stepping inside a giant jewellery box for the day with exquisite works from some of the region’s best jewellery designers and artists. If you’re serious about silver, go gaga over gold, or just love your shiny stones or showing off costume jewellery, then there will be plenty for you to check out. Browse the many jewellery stalls and find a unique handcrafted piece that you won’t find in the major stores. There’s also a good range of styles, price points and individual pieces from independent jewellery designers and craftspeople. 

What might you find? Lots of jewellery! Pieces made from silver, gold, pearls, recycled metal art, precious and semi-precious stones, glass, resin, ceramics and more. You’ll find earrings, bracelets, bangles, necklaces, pendants, cufflinks, brooches, rings and more.

Retro Depot in October

If you love the brights of the 60s and 70s, mid-century furniture, funky retro clothing and macramé then we know where you need to be. Come in on our retro themed day in October to explore the styles and fashions from the recent past. 

What might you find? Being old fashioned is fun again, particularly when it comes to clothes – so browse the fashions, jewellery and accessories of times gone by to deck out your retro wardrobe. And make your home fashionably nostalgic with retro homewares and furniture.


Makers-Con 2020!

Hobbyists convene! The Makers Convention 2020 Sunday the 13th of September will unite stalls and attractions that showcase a range of hobbies with the high-quality handcrafts that visitors have come to expect. Attractions, demonstrations, and a cosplay competition will also be lined up. The ability is within each maker.

What might you find? This is an exciting event for pop culture fans and enthusiasts. The event seeks to spotlight a colorful mix of interests: live action role-play, cosplay competition, steampunk, leather makers, corset designers, millinery, and medieval recreation*. Of course, all with high-quality handcrafts abound throughout the markets. The ability is within each maker.

For those looking for a show, we will have AFK Choir grace the markets stage. They’re a Canberra choir that sing about all things pop culture. A bat’leth duel is also in the works. If you don’t even have to Google that, then you know exactly where to be.

Dee’s comics

First opening its doors at the Charnwood shops in 1988, Dee’s is Canberra’s oldest still operating specialist comic shop. Dees Book and Comic Shop (Dee’s Comics) is a family owned business that has been serving the Canberra community for over 25 years.

With a shop that is bursting at the seams! the store is overloaded with an ever-expanding range of Comics, Graphic Novels, Collectibles and other comic book inspired awesomeness!!

With the retirement of original owners, Dee and Stuart in 2016, Brendon, and his family continue the ‘Dee’s’ legacy. Continuing to build on the things that have always made Dee’s special and unique, with a passion for Australian produced and independent comics has led to Dee’s carrying a huge and quickly expanding range of amazing domestically produced comics and graphic novels. Dee’s were very proud to be able to showcase some of the spectacular homegrown talent Australia and Canberra has to offer.

 

Cos-Play Competition - with Major Cash Prizes as well as sponsored prizes from Dee's Comic's and more ! with event photos taking care by Philip Cristallo Photography to capture all the action. Pick your favorite character and come join the Fun 

Sign up for the competition will be from 10am on the day next to the stage area with a under 16's class and opens class.

Character Tributes

For the past 6 years the skills and passion has been nurtured just outside of Canberra to bring out a creativity that is - Original hand crochet & knitted character tributes made by Alicia out of Goulburn, their cheeky expressions are sure to bring a smile to your dial. Covering all of Pop Culture from super heroes, cartoons, sci-fi and gaming characters. These handmade items are a traditional take on the characters you know and love.

Portobello Road in August

Say goodbye to winter with a day out browsing through an eclectic mix of quirky and interesting treasures on our last Portobello Road event for the year.

When it comes to Portobello Road, the question is more what CAN’T you find? Stallholders are constantly updating their items to make sure they always have something valuable and exciting to share. To start, see a great range of antique jewelry, china, glass art, silver, linens, restored pieces, cutlery and crockery. Count on nostalgic home-ware items to also be available such as lamps, clocks, and even typewriters, all on Portobello Road. Have fun treasure hunting and tell us what you find!


Creative Fibre

Creative types unite! Be inspired by the originality of the region’s most talented textile artists showcasing and selling their work at our annual Creative Fibre. This day offers an excellent opportunity to engage with the textile artists who call the Canberra region home. You can see products and learn about the processes involved in designing, printing on fabric, creating mixed media home-wares and wearable textiles, weaving, knitting, crocheting, hand dyeing fabric and more. 

What might you find? A large range of handcrafted home-wares, clothing and textiles.


Kids in the Shed

This is your chance to celebrate being a kid and doing what kids do best… having fun! Bring your kids, parents and grandparents to this super fun family day out at the markets. All these kids having fun means a lively atmosphere and buzzing energy all around.

What might you find? Stacks of products that kids love including handcrafted toys, kids’ room accessories, artworks and lots of bright, modern handmade clothes for babies and little boys and girls. And of course, what’s a family day out without delicious treat foods. Yummo!
