Food of the Month January 2019: Pies

Pippy’s and Pippy’s Hot Pies, like their name suggests, sells some of the most scrumptious pies at the Markets. The stall has been with the Old Bus Depot Markets for 24 years. It started as a project by co-owners Brian Loader and Stuart McKinnon where the latter described it as a “meeting of minds over a glass of wine.”

And what a successful business it’s been since! Their pies have certainly become a staple at the Markets, extending to other baked products such as quiches, cakes and pastries. Their bestsellers are their pepper steak, steak and mushroom, and a Moroccan vegetable pie with chickpeas and spices.

In addition to a range of pies, they also serve up sausage rolls available as a traditional sausage roll, vegetable roll, and a pork and fennel roll. They come in regular sizes and cocktail sizes to better cater for parties. Because most products are loaded into the pie warmer, you can get them hot. Still, you have the option to ask for them cold to enjoy at home.

Their newest product is a range of salads for summer. They come in caesar salad, thai beef salad, and a roasted vegetable salad with balsamic dressing. They’re also ready for Christmas with Christmas cakes and Christmas pudding.

With regard to their product line, Pippy’s and Pippy’s Hot Pies Co-Owner Stuart McKinnon believes that understanding what customers look for was an important factor. They found success by sticking to traditional items that people know and love.

Stuart was with the Old Bus Depot Markets back when it first opened. Throughout, he’s gone to admire other stalls too, namely Giardi for their Swarovski-studded aprons, Wilhelmina Moggs for their chicken hats, and Bredbo Black Garlic for their black garlic.

All products from Pippy’s and Pippy’s Hot Pies are available as wholesale items as well. The business can also go by the name of Desiree’s Fine Foods located in Fyshwick. For enquiries, please contact 0412-458 445 or visit their website.

See Pippy’s and enjoy their scrumptious pies Sundays at the Old Bus Depot Markets.
