Waste Knot, Want Knot: Using crochet to reclaim fabric – 1:00pm

Kristen from The Granny Square Conspiracy will teach you how to turn worn-out and unwanted denim into something new, useful and beautiful using a few simple crochet stitches.
More than 500,000 tonnes of leather and textile waste goes into landfill in Australia each year. But many jeans and other textiles that have been well loved and worn out still have lots of usable fabric in them that can be turned in to something beautiful.
In this class you will learn:
– how to source, choose and prepare waste and worn out fabric
– the simple crochet stitches you will need to make your project
– the technique to turn your used fabric into something new and
– how to modify the technique to express your own style make any number of useful things, such as coasters, trivets, baskets, bags, decorations, rugs etc.
What’s included: the ticket price includes a hook, string and reclaimed fabric to make your first project. It also includes take-home notes. (There is a $5 discount if you would like to bring your own crochet hook and string. A 2-4 size hook is suitable depending on the thickness of your string.)
What you will need: please bring with you a pair of fabric scissors, a seam-ripper/quick-unpick and a ruler. If you have old and worn fabric and string/yarn you would like to use please also feel free to bring it along. Fabric such as old jeans or bed sheets is suitable.
Additional Information:
  • The workshop is being held in the Fitters Workshop – adjacent to the Old Bus Depot Markets (inside the Former Transport Depot building), overlooking Brodburger and the Canberra Glassworks.
  • Beginners are welcome – no previous experience necessary.
